In May 2022, global leaders are meeting in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire for the fifteenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP15) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. The event, which will also see participation from the private sector, civil society and other stakeholders, focuses on how to protect and sustainably manage one of Earth’s most precious commodities - land. Here, we look back at a 50-year global effort to halt the spread of the world’s deserts.
