The UNEP report ‘Bracing for Superbugs: Strengthening environmental action in the One Health response to antimicrobial resistance’ provides evidence that the environment plays a key role in the development and spread of AMR. The report reveals that prevention is at the core of the action, and a concerted systems approach, like the ‘One Health’ approach which recognizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, plant, and environmental health is the best response to tackling AMR. The report evaluates key drivers of AMR in three economic sectors: pharmaceuticals and other chemicals, agriculture and food, and healthcare, in addition to pollutants from poor sanitation, sewage and waste. Solutions to preventing and responding to AMR are provided, including reducing the risk and burden of AMR, and addressing the triple planetary crisis.
