PLP-ESS Module 7: Land Acquisition, Restrictions on Land Use, and Involuntary Resettlement (Joyce Onguglo)

Regional Training on Environment Impact Assessment, Stakeholder Engagement and Social Impact Assessment in the Pacific. The training ran from 11 November to 3 December, 2020.

Module 7 is a presentation on ESS 5 LAND ACQUISITION, RESTRICTIONS ON LAND USE AND INVOLUNTARY RESETTLEMENT delivered by World Officers Ms Joyce Onguglo – Social Development Specialist
and Dr Rebekah Ramsey – Social Development Specialist

Relocation and resettlement for projects is a real problem for Pasifika with limited land for projects and a connection to country for customary land owners and settlers, navigating resettlement creates social tension and can lead to lengthy and costly disputes. Dr Ramsey draws on her experiences from World Bank projects across the world and the Pacific to provide practical examples of the importance of stakeholder engagement to minimise social conflicts.

There are a total of 8 training modules each covering a specific topic relating to EIA, stakeholder engagement and social impact assessment. The first three Modules were delivered by the Environmental Monitoring and Governance Programme of SPREP. The remaining five modules presented by World Bank specialists in SIA, Stakeholder Engagement, Community Health and Safety and other areas relevant to ESIA.
